![]() ![]() ![]() I believe that at this very time, I had a terrible cold. And all I could think, right at that instant was, “I want to have a book baby with Liz!” It was all-consuming.Īnd I was like, “Squirrel!” Meaning, “We don’t have to write our novels today?!?!” And Erin wrote that if Liz and I ever had a book baby, it would be something like this particular book. Liz: I was clinging to you like a kitten because I was trying to learn to write my first novel and I’d chosen you (lucky you!) to teach me!Īnd one day out of the blue, we received an email from our mutual agent, Erin Murphy, that included a book review of a forthcoming title with a brief description. Liz and I knew each other but not well at this point, if I remember correctly. Audrey: Like all picture book origin stories, this one starts years ago. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The gormenghast trilogy review![]() ![]() In fact, the Gormenghast trilogy doesn’t offer much in terms of plot and could probably be summarised in a single paragraph. Each character has their own chapter and while discovering a place filled with people who follow complex, ancient rituals, unwilling to modernise or evolve, the reader is dunked into an atmosphere of gothic novels resembling Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho, where the setting becomes more important than the plot. It opens with a series of chapters introducing the titular crumbling castle, Gormenghast, and its many residents. We enter the world of Gormenghast as unwelcome intruders in Titus Groan. Back then, it left doctors baffled, today we know he was afflicted by dementia with Lewy bodies, a neurodegenerative illness, dismantling a brilliant mind while still far too young. Twisting his mind with visual hallucinations and paranoid delusions, it rendered his words incoherent and his illustrations crude and nightmarish. He planned to write more but alas, an illness struck him down, gradually stripping him off his artistic abilities. ![]() ![]() In 1946 Titus Groan was published, followed by Gormenghast in 1950 and finally Titus Alone in 1959. He began working on the Gormenghast novels while in the army. Like Childs, Jackson is an experienced equestrian. His sidekick is Anaba Raines, a Black former Marine and the eponymous Nightmare, whose transformation into a fierce and hellish horse makes her a formidable foe to angels seeking to do Michael harm. The hero is Michael Childs, a Black FBI agent who competes in jousts (at the opening of the book, he shows up at the scene of a grisly murder clad in medieval armor) and who (unbeknownst to him) descends from divinity. But underneath, it is about much more: a son grappling with his father's abandonment, the persecution of “the other” and the revelation that maybe Hell isn't the unremittingly evil place we thought it was. ![]() On the surface, the story is about a series of grisly murders. Jackson puts a fresh spin on biblical characters like Gabriel and Lucifer by turning them into FBI agents, a parish priest, a homeless preacher and other seemingly ordinary folks who pursue ancient vendettas in modern day New York City. ![]() ![]() Jackson’s debut novel Forging a Nightmare (Angry Robot, 2021) immerses the reader in a world of menace-fallen angels and demigods whose history of alliances and resentments stretch to the beginning of time. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The woman upstairs rachel hawkins![]() ![]() That means rewriting it 100 times until it feels right, and at three in the morning, when you get up for a wee, going: “Oh, actually, that line would be better if it was like this.” Some students told me they had a party where they only ate things mentioned in the show – stuff like hamburger pasta It’s a lot of work to make it sound like no work has gone into something. I was trying to find something more real. With Him & Her, I wanted to strip everything back to study people on a minute level. Comedy is a set of tropes and expectations – and funny is an emotional response. I called it anti-comedy at the time, and I still feel like that. ![]() There were lots of people who said, perhaps rightly, that its presence set the show back, because instead of being interpreted as an intimate, truthful examination of a couple, it became a show where a woman does a poo – and isn’t that shocking? Which was kind of the whole point. The poo Becky does in the pilot was the subject of much discussion. You shit and piss and stink and forget to flush the toilet and enjoy sex and eat too much and drink too much – we all do. In the first episode, I wanted to say to the audience: these people are you. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The last kingdom series in order![]() ![]() At the start of each round, players complete their hand by drafting cards from a deck specific to that round, then the war begins in one of the five regions. It’s what we all call our consciousness, the ‘I’ at the centre of us. The idea that there is a small voice within us, independent of our neurobiology, is perhaps something we would all agree with after all we listen to it every day, it tell us what to have for breakfast, it gets us into arguments and let us know when we’re in love. ![]() Rather than being dry and scientific, Incognito steers us through the minefield of modern neuroscience and delivers a lucid and entertaining explanation of the synaptic and biological happenings deep within the grey matter of our brains. This is the quandary which lies at the heart of David Eagleman’s Incognito, a book which dethrones the notion of a ‘me’ at the centre of our lives. As Carl Jung put it, ‘in each of us there is another whom we do not know’, while Pink Floyd said, ‘there’s someone in my head, but it’s not me’. There is something funny going on inside our heads. ![]() |
